If you are familiar with the work of Jo Boaler and youcubed, it’s probably in the context of math education. You may have heard of number sense – but what about data sense? This team has also done wonderful work around data literacy. In any NGSS school system, working towards data literacy as early as possible and across time is essential, but educators often receive little support in bringing these experiences to their young learners. Data Talks from the youcubed team are perhaps the easiest entry point for starting this work in your classrooms. Along with some guidance around facilitating a conversation, there are visual data that students at all levels can engage with. For K – 5 teachers this might be just the resource you are looking for to begin engaging your students’ in conversations around data. For upper school science educators, these data visualizations might be a handy resource for one off engagements (like check ins or back pockets) to boost students’ data literacy skills.
The following is from the youcubed website, The ability to work with, interpret, and communicate data is now an essential life skill for all students, not just those pursuing STEM careers. At youcubed, we believe data science should be a central part of K–12 education. By engaging students in meaningful, relevant data investigations, we can help them build critical thinking skills and prepare for a rapidly changing world.
