4 key aspects of 3D aligned assessments from OpenSciEd (and some more detailed info for those who want a deep dive)
OpenSciEd (OSE) has long proven themselves as the leader in quality (freely available : ) curriculum at all levels of education. I’ll write a post soon sharing links to OSE resources at various grade levels. In a nutshell, OSE has the highest quality curriculum available. It is fully resourced and completely free (slideshows, material lists, lesson plans etc.) – but that’s not what this post is about. For those who need easy, quick, clear and succinct guidance on developing assessments for their K – 12 science curriculum – this is for you. OpenSci Ed Four Assessment Criteria
Go deeper: Achieve is the not for profit organization that wrote the NGSS. Several years ago they passed their NGSS support torch to WestEd. Before they did, however, they did a deep and thorough dive into how to assess three dimensional standards. They called this their Task Annotation Project in Science. It’s awesome. The OpenSci Ed folks looked to the work that Achieve did when they were developing assessments for their units (and you’ll see a link to the TAPS project at the top of the “Four Criteria” doc). While the Achieve site is no longer being maintained, there are still some excellent resources there (you just might have to work a little for it and work through some ads). In my opinion, the good stuff is a series of very approachable PDFs all at the ‘bottom’ of the website in a section titled “Tools and Resources.”
